Stop leaks
Water is the motorhome’s enemy; it can cause major damage by seeping into the structure.
What is sealing
Sealing is a waterproof barrier that keeps the structure of the motorhome in perfect condition, protecting the joints between roof and walls, rooflights, windows, grilles and the doors of the various garages.
How a seal is made
The joint between walls and roof is covered by a gasket with a layer of butyl, which is held in place by a trim strip, all fixed with screws.
Lifespan of the seal
The sealant lasts 2-3 years; after that time it no longer guarantees its original properties of waterproofing, elasticity and adhesion.
The sun is the first enemy of seals, as it dries out the screw-cover gaskets, which no longer adhere perfectly, allowing water to attack the screw heads and little by little run down the thread into the structure of the motorhome, while the sealant is subjected to thermal expansion and/or natural relaxation and oozes out.
How to avoid leaks
To avoid leaks, check the seals regularly!
As highlighted above, seals are important because they insulate the walls of our motorhome’s structure and prevent water from seeping into them, avoiding deterioration.
It is important to keep the condition of the silicone and window gaskets monitored to avoid unpleasant surprises.
In fact, it is recommended to redo all the silicone sealing roughly every 2-3 years; it is a long process, as the existing silicone has to be removed and the new one applied.
It is essential that it is carried out only by competent people.
